Dave Peck - delivered today’s invocation with a message on making your Optimism come true.  With words of encouragement, offers of help, or actions of support of others, you can embody the spirit of Optimism.  He then led the Pledge of Allegiance.
 
President Dan Rodriguez shared some interesting tidbits about June 18th, this day in history:
  • 1812 War of 1812 begins as US declares war against Britain
  • 1815 Battle of Waterloo; Napoleon and France defeated by British forces under Wellington and Prussian troops under Blucher
  •   1928 American aviator Amelia Earhart becomes the 1st woman to fly across the Atlantic Ocean, landing at Burry Port, Wales
  •   1940 Winston Churchill's "this was their finest hour" speech urging perseverance during Battle of Britain delivered to British House of Commons. 1960 US Open Men's Golf, Cherry Hills CC: Arnold Palmer stages greatest comeback in tournament history; erases a 7-stroke final round deficit to win his only US Open title by 2 strokes ahead of Jack Nicklaus

GREAT BREAFAST
Greg Young took the mic and said thanks to our breakfast providers. Steve Kady reports that we SOLD OUT!  The Culinary Arts Boot Camp for Veterans - https://culinaryartsbootcampforveterans.org - will make a presentation on July 19th.  The two chefs for today came to the front of the room to say thanks for the opportunity.  As part of the program, they will be with us for at least the next five weeks. Thanks to Chris Dunphy for working with this crew to come up with the great price and the delicious meal.

CHANGING OF THE GUARD

Greg Young announced that, after many years, he is stepping down as club treasurer and will be turning his duties over to Pat Bush, who has been "shadowing" Greg for the past several months.  Many thanks to Greg for all the time and energy he has spent over the past years.

HERMAN MOTZ
Don Thomson reports that on Saturday July 31st at 10:00 am there will be a memorial day at Thomas Jefferson High School for  Herman Motz.  Coach Motz passed away earlier this year at age 91.  The T.J. athletic fields were named after him in 2011.  Motz taught English and Latin, and was the head football coach as well as the track team coach. He was with Denver Public Schools for 35 years as is the last coach to win a state championship with a Denver Prep League team. His Spartans won the state title in 1980 and 1989

Robert Wardlaw - mark your calendars for our meeting on Friday, August 13th - it will be the Principals to Breakfast meeting for our Super Citizen schools.  School reps, please reach out to your principals and invite them.  Also, we need school representatives for both Holm and Ellis beginning in the fall, so please reach out to Robert if you are interested
Club | Bike MS Cyclists on Strava
Bob Avery - announced that Dave Telpner will also be riding Bike MS, along with Bob and Bill Morgan.  Bike MS will be a one day event on Saturday, June 26th.  There will be an option to ride 38 miles or 70 miles. This will be Bob’s 32nd year riding, and he appreciates the support the club has provided him and the cause.  Bob and Bill Morgan report that you can donate by visiting the website - you can then search for a rider to make a contribution in their name.

IN MEMORIAM
Phil Perington wanted to share a few words about John Stoffel, a club member who passed away recently.  John was a dedicated member of local Democratic Party, and severed as the Assistant City Attorney.  Phil remembers him fondly, and says that the club will miss him.

Dan Rodriguez - The Prez started us off by saying that he’s happy to see his kids successful and to have three grandkids that are great (not to be confused with great-grandkids).
Phil Perington - happy that breakfast is now $8.
Tom Overton - happy has been able to travel all over the state and now will be going to Montana for three weeks.
Greg Young - happy that Pat Bush is taking over as treasurer.
Bill Morgan - happy for the bike MS support from the club.
Gary Strowbridge - happy for his granddaughter who is competing in a golf tournament at age 14.
Don Thomson - happy since his daughter and granddaughter are coming in from Seattle this weekend.  Don also has another granddaughter going to go to Montana State in the fall.
Dick Nickoloff - happy because in two weeks he will be in Northern Wyoming with lots of family.
Bob Avery - happy to be done with the UHaul company and any of their products.
Bryan Prosperi - happy that it is Pride Month.
Tom Hoch - happy since he will be going to Northern Minnesota soon.
Pat Bush - happy that his son is successful in Virginia and that he and his family are coming to visit next week.  Also, Pat’s project he wanted to complete before retiring is ahead of schedule and likely will be done this summer.  So retirement won’t be far away!
Tom Kramis - happy that his son got the game ball as South High School won their first Lacrosse playoff game in 21 years.

A special day today, a wonderful accumulation of lifecycle milestones. Thanks to my wife, Debbie Reinberg, for 21 years of keeping me around and helping me grow. Congratulations to my son Jeremy and his wife Manuela who celebrate their 6th anniversary today as well. And Happy Birthday to their daughter Olivia who turns 3 tomorrow but whose birthdate actually would have been June 18 as well if she'd been born in the States rather than Germany in the wee hours of June 19. And to all, happy observed Juneteenth and all that represents.

The June birthday boys were asked to raise their hands.  One (Greg Hurd) was attending via Zoom, while Bill Morgan, Bob Finkelmeier and Bryce Slaby were live and in person to receive their birthday serenade.  Hopefully there was audio difficulty with the Zoom link, for Greg’s sake…

We then had a Drawing!  There was $120 in the pot, and the Queen of Hearts held the key. Bryan Prosperi took a shot for the big bucks, but came up empty.  So too did Paul Stratton, who benefited from Robert Wardlaw’s early departure, yet failed to find the Queen. Cups of easy money cash went to : Don Thomson,Oscar Sorensen,Pat Bush, Josh Lipuma
Nametag drawing - President Dan and Phil Perington announced that the member wearing their nametag when their name was called could take a shot at the big bucks in the pot, or receive a raffle ticket ($25 value) instead.  Pat Bush had his name drawn and was given the choice.  He went for the long shot at the $120, but alas, it was not to be.  Stay tuned for next week’s adventure…
