Tribute to Oscar by Tom Mauro
Oscar Sorensen was 86 years old. He passed away just before Christmas, one of his favorite times of year. He often said, “Jumpin, jiminy, I just love Christmas!”
Oscar was born in Minnesota and was raised in Iowa. He served in the U.S. Army in Germany during the Cold War and graduated from the University of Iowa when he returned. He moved to Denver, worked for Continental Oil Company in Houston, and eventually became a real estate agent, which was his real calling. He was married to Pat and his daughter is Julie Sorensen Berra. Oscar was a great husband and father.
Oscar was a charter member of the Monaco South Optimist Club and truly was its heart and soul. He delighted in all of the projects it started and did throughout the years including the Citizenship program, the Brain Bowl, Boys and Girls Club Thanksgiving dinners, and particularly the Christmas Tree lot. Oscar was putting the Santa on top of the trailer for many years - way beyond when he should have been climbing up there.
Oscar was my sponsor into Monaco South in 1983. Joie and I met Oscar and Pat when Julie and Amy, my daughter started attending kindergarten. We became fast friends and when I mentioned to Oscar that I wanted to join a community service organization, he brought me into Optimism. He was the best sponsor ever. He took me to every Optimist project Monaco South had at the time. We got involved in Destination Imagination with our daughters, and Oscar eventually became a national judge. Our daughters were very successful at DI and we attended eight World Finals together.
Oscar was my trusted advisor when I ran for the Denver School Board. He gave countless hours on the facility management committee for DPS overseeing the two bond issues that were passed during my term. I did not always agree with Oscar on every issue, but I soon learned to also listen to him. He was smart, quick, and had a great sense of humor.
We will all miss Oscar more than we know, but we cannot forget the Optimism he promoted and shared with everyone he met. He loved all of his Optimist brothers and helped all of us numerous times with his knowledge, skills, and common sense.
